Audience settings

Your audience settings hold the name, the sender details campaigns go out with, the fallback language, and the topics contacts can subscribe to. They apply to every campaign, form and import that runs on that audience, so it is worth getting them right once.

Your audience settings hold the name, the sender details campaigns go out with, the fallback language, and the topics contacts can subscribe to. They apply to every campaign, form and import that runs on that audience, so it is worth getting them right once.

You reach the settings from Contacts. On an account with one audience you open "Audience settings" directly; if you have several mailing lists you first pick the list you want to edit from the overview.

What you configure here

  1. Name — how the audience appears in the interface, in pickers and in reports. Only you and your team see it; it never appears in an email.
  2. Sender information — the from-name, email address and reply-to address that campaigns use by default, plus the postal details that belong at the bottom of a mailing. Recipients see these, so use an address people recognise and that you actually read.
  3. Language — the fallback for imports and subscribe forms that do not set a language themselves. It decides the language of system texts such as the confirmation and unsubscribe pages.
  4. Topics — the subscription preferences contacts can pick on your forms and in the preference centre. Adding a topic here makes it selectable on every form of this audience.

Sender details need a verified domain

Authentication is what gets your mail delivered. Use a sender address on a domain you have set up with SPF, DKIM and DMARC — a free address such as gmail.com will be rejected or land in spam at many providers.

These settings reach further than you think

Custom fields, topics, segments and subscribe forms all hang off this audience. Renaming a topic or removing a field therefore affects every form and every campaign that uses it — including personalisation tags in templates, which stop resolving if the field they point at is gone.

Do sender details apply to every campaign?

They are the default that each new campaign starts with. You can override the from-name and reply-to address per campaign in the wizard without changing the audience settings.

What does the audience language change?

It is used for contacts that arrive without a language of their own, through an import or a form that does not set one. The language on the contact drives the system texts that person sees, such as the confirmation and unsubscribe pages.

Where do I find imports and exports of this audience?

Both have their own overview under Contacts, showing every run with its status and, for imports, a breakdown of what was added, updated and refused.

Can I delete an audience?

Deleting removes its contacts, fields, topics, segments and forms with it, and that cannot be undone. Export the contacts first if there is any chance you will want them back, and check that no campaign or automation still points at the audience.
