Topics vs. tags

Both group contacts, but a tag is something you assign and the contact never sees, while a topic is an interest the contact manages themselves.

The difference is who is in control.

  • Tag: you give it to a contact. The contact never sees it. Use it for your own grouping, such as "Customer" or "Workshop".
  • Topic: the contact sees it and can tick or untick it on your subscribe form and on the unsubscribe page. Use it for what people want to receive, such as "Recipes" or "Offers".

Give topics at import

In the "Topics" section of an import you can give the imported contacts one or more topics. After that they can change those topics themselves.

Keep contacts instead of losing them

When your audience has topics, the unsubscribe page shows them above the unsubscribe form. Someone who only wants fewer emails can untick one topic and keep the rest, instead of leaving completely.

When should I use a tag and when a topic?

Use a tag for grouping you manage yourself and the contact does not need to see. Use a topic when contacts should decide for themselves whether they want to receive something.

Can I segment on both?

Yes. A segment can have a "Subscriber tags" rule and a "Subscriber topics" rule, and you can combine them, for example tag "Customer" and topic "Offers".
